Presence of the Loved One
by Goethe (translated from the German)

I think of thee when sunbeams dance and shimmer
Across the sea.
When midnight pools reflect the moon's pale glimmer
I think of thee.

I see thee by the distant plains and ridges
When dust clouds rise;
At dead of night when, crossing narrow bridges,
The wanderer sighs.

I hear thee when the muffled waves are beating
Upon the shore.
I listen to the quiet woods repeating
Thy name once more.

I'm with thee, though we're parted, for my dreaming
Can bring thee near.
The sun sinks, soon I see the bright stars gleaming.
O wert thou here!
