The Peacock

Like some exotic eastern prince he struts,
Robed in shimmering hues,
With tufted crown
And white-ringed eyes heavy with mascara,
His jewelled train spangled with gaudy gems.

Once favoured of King Solomon
In ancient times, and Juno's pet,
He flaunts his dignity,
Peacock-proud – but not too proud
To squabble with the humble sparrow,
Snatching at titbits;
Regal blue and tweedy brown,
Prince and peasant,
Sharing the crumbs from an unknown table.
