To my Mother
by Heinrich Heine (translated from the German)

In madness once I came thee to forsake.
I wished to travel to earth's farthest shore
To see if Love existed any more,
This Love, in loving, to my arms to take.

I searched for Love in every street and lane,
My hands I stretched in front of every door
To beg for alms of love, though mean and poor.
They gave me mocking hatred back again.

And still I searched for Love in many lands,
And ever came away with empty hands,
And turned for home, sick, weary and downcast.

And lo! thou camest hastening to meet me,
And in the brimming eyes that turned to greet me
I saw the dearest, long-sought Love at last.
